San Juan to Roll Out 1.5 Million Smart Water Meters

Kurrant News Desk · ·2 min read

The Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (PRASA) is set to fully deploy 1.5 million smart meters across the island this year, following a successful pilot program. The $407 million project, funded by federal sources, including the Federal Emergency Management Agency and Community Development Block Grant-Mitigation Programs, aims to modernize PRASA’s water infrastructure.

A recent amendment to the contract with Utility Metering Solutions, approved by the Financial Oversight and Management Board, allows for the full implementation of the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) project. The contract, initially signed in 2023, will remain effective until November 2030. The project includes integrating software with PRASA’s systems, providing advanced sensors, network maintenance, and technical support, as well as training for staff.

In a separate development, PRASA will receive a $333 million loan from the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DNER) to fund 23 critical water projects. The loan, provided under the Clean Water State Revolving Fund, carries a 0% interest rate and includes principal forgiveness. These projects aim to address vulnerabilities in PRASA’s wastewater system, highlighted by Hurricane Fiona.

The AMI project, initiated through a competitive procurement process in 2022, includes both a pilot phase, which involved the installation of 1,000 smart meters, and the current full deployment phase. The initiative is part of broader efforts to upgrade Puerto Rico’s water infrastructure and improve resilience against future natural disasters.
