Anas, part of the FS Italiane Group’s Infrastructure Pole, has completed the ‘Green Island’ in the Cosenza province, marking a significant milestone in the ‘Smart Road’ project. The project’s Green Islands are set to serve as control rooms and electricity producers and distributors as well as EV charging hubs for the scheme. The ‘Smart Road’ project is among the first in Europe to integrate advanced technology into highway infrastructure, enhancing traffic control, monitoring, and information dissemination through smart technologies that enable vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-road communication. The €42 million project, includes 800 multifunctional stations with 4K cameras, AI, and sensors over 140 km, connected via fiber optics. Additional work is underway to extend the smart road over 94.5 km across regions from Campania to Calabria. ‘Smart Road’ aims to improve road safety by providing real-time service and safety information to drivers.
