Smart Meter Challenges in Great Britain Show Slow Improvement

In a recent update from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), it was revealed that nearly four million smart meters in Great Britain are not operating as intended. Despite the high figures, the situation appears to be improving, as the number of faulty or non-smart mode operating meters decreased from 4.31 million in June 2023 to 3.98 million by the end of the year. Energy UK highlighted the technical challenges in ensuring all meters operate in smart mode but reassured customers that suppliers are committed to resolving these issues. Similarly, Smart Energy GB pointed out that with nearly 35 million smart meters installed across Great Britain, the majority are functioning correctly. The Minister for Energy Efficiency and Green Finance has called on Ofgem, the energy regulator, to take decisive action against underperforming energy suppliers, emphasizing the need for detailed plans to address connectivity issues and enhance the customer experience with smart meters.
