New Orleans has begun installing flood detection sensors throughout the city, thanks to a partnership with United Way, Verizon, and developer Hyfi. These sensors, already active in some locations, send real-time flood data to stormwater managers and the public. The initiative aims to integrate data with apps like Waze or Google Maps by next year, enhancing public awareness and response during floods. The project, currently funded by Verizon, hopes to expand with city support if successful. Phase 1 of installation should be completed in a few months, with 50 sensors planned in total.
