The city of Chandler will soon roll out a $14 million Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) project, aimed at upgrading the city’s water management system. The initiative, supported by $1.2M in grants from the EPA and Water Infrastructure Finance Authority of Arizona (WIFA), will replace 30,000 aging meters and install 48 gateway collectors to facilitate real-time water usage tracking. This shift from Automated Meter Reading (AMR) to AMI will allow residents to monitor daily water consumption, receive leak alerts, and pay bills via a new customer portal.
The project should ensure more accurate billing, reduce equipment failures, and promote better water conservation. Chandler’s City Council has partnered with Ferguson Enterprises, LLC, to manage the implementation, and installation is expected to start in late 2024. The meters, with a projected lifespan of 20 years, will help avoid inaccurate readings from outdated devices, contributing to overall utility efficiency and reliability.
