Connexin deployment in Southend-NEWS

Southend Council is reviewing planning applications for the installation of 27 new 36-foot masts in Westcliff and Chalkwell. Submitted by Hull-based firm Connexin, the project aims to connect mobile phones and an Internet of Things (IoT) network to monitor streetlights, parking, and other services.

This innovative network is expected to streamline city services through a range of use cases. Smart sensors will notify waste management when bins need emptying, optimize energy use and maintenance of streetlights, and offer flood alerts through real-time water level monitoring. Additionally, dynamic traffic management will reduce congestion, and smart parking sensors will provide real-time parking data to drivers, improving traffic flow and reducing emissions.

Southend’s councillor for climate and environment, emphasized the council’s own smaller-device IoT network for services like flood alerts and traffic management. Though Southend Council isn’t directly involved with Connexin’s plan, a meeting is set to explore potential collaboration on network integration. Streets slated for masts include Southbourne Grove and Chalkwell Avenue, with legal regulations likely ensuring approval.
