Affinity Water has commenced its inaugural smart metering program with a trial phase in parts of Harlow and Bishop’s Stortford, Hertfordshire. The initiative involves installing around 20,000 smart meters in residential homes and 20 in non-residential properties, paving the way for broader deployment in the future. This move aims to improve water conservation and management across the region.
The smart meters are designed to help customers monitor their water usage more effectively, identify leaks promptly, and reduce overall consumption. By providing detailed and frequent usage data, the technology enables quicker leak detection and repairs, minimizing water loss and service disruptions.
Scheduled to begin on February 3, 2025, the trial will target selected areas. Following a successful trial and regulatory approval, Affinity Water plans to expand the program, targeting the installation of an additional 380,000 smart meters over the next five years.
Affinity Water is collaborating with partners like Arqiva, Clancy, and Bregan MainsFlow to implement the smart metering technology effectively.
The initiative is part of the company’s Water Resource Management Plan, which aims to reduce per capita water consumption and significantly lower leakage rates by 2050.
