Guimarães City Council has announced the allocation of €2.87 million through the SPACE4Cities initiative, funded by the European Union. The funding aims to support innovative projects that utilize European satellite data to develop smarter, more resilient, and sustainable cities.
Businesses, research centers, and non-profit organizations are invited to submit proposals by April 9, 2025. Projects should focus on one of three priority areas: Urban Planning and Management, Sustainable Mobility, or Climate Adaptation. The initiative seeks to address urban challenges such as climate change, improve public transportation, and enhance urban planning efficiency using space technologies.
The SPACE4Cities project has a total budget of €5.2 million, with €2.87 million specifically designated for businesses. The project will progress through three stages: concept development, prototype creation, and practical testing. Between 2026 and 2027, five selected innovations will be implemented in Helsinki, Amsterdam, Athens, Ghent, and Guimarães, along with an additional ten European cities to be chosen later.
Coordinated by Forum Virium Helsinki in collaboration with various European cities and the Aerospace Valley cluster in France, SPACE4Cities aims to leverage satellite data to complement existing urban information sources. This effort is intended to foster the creation of more sustainable and efficient urban environments.
