Alcorcón Trials Smart Irrigation System to Reduce Water Use and Cut Costs

The city of Alcorcón has launched a pilot project to digitally manage irrigation across its green spaces, aiming to improve water efficiency and reduce maintenance costs.

The initiative, currently being tested in the Ciudad de Mayarí park, uses a solar-powered LoRa-based base station compatible with existing irrigation controllers. Managed via a centralized digital platform, the system enables remote scheduling, real-time fault detection, and adaptation to weather changes.

If successful, the project may expand to cover the city’s 340 hectares of green areas, including 16 urban parks and 3 forest parks. The project is part of Alcorcón’s broader smart city strategy under the Spanish Network of Smart Cities (RECI). Vendors involved in the technology deployment were not disclosed.
