North Carolina has implemented 2,500 artificial intelligence-powered traffic signals across intersections in what is currently the largest live statewide deployment of its kind in the U.S.

The system, developed by transportation technology firm Flow Labs, leverages machine learning and connected vehicle data to optimize signal operations without requiring new infrastructure or physical field studies.

While the system does not manage traffic in real time, it supports engineers in identifying and improving intersection performance based on real-world traffic patterns. Flow Labs has also partnered with the Florida Department of Transportation using similar data integration strategies involving TomTom.

Florida is additionally collaborating with Israeli firm NoTraffic, which combines smart sensors and AI to manage multimodal traffic flows. The move comes as U.S. transportation agencies increasingly adopt data-driven solutions to enhance road safety and efficiency.
