Estepona Advances Traffic Monitoring with New Intelligent Camera Network

The Ayuntamiento de Estepona has opened a tender to install a next-generation traffic control and speed-trap system across the town. The project, valued at approximately €970 000, will deploy 110 new AI-enabled cameras at around 80 strategic locations within both the town centre and surrounding areas.

The new system builds on an earlier installation of intelligent cameras and expands the scope by integrating advanced functions such as automatic licence-plate recognition, real-time vehicle geolocation and classification, and high-definition video recording. The network will be operated from the local Traffic Control Centre at the police headquarters and will also feed into other security forces as needed.

The contract includes not only the supply and installation of the new equipment, but also ongoing maintenance of the existing camera network. A certified speed camera compliant with the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) system will be installed at a location yet to be disclosed; it will be supported by a mobile licence-plate capture unit and software integrated with the national DGT database for immediate processing of violations.

All data transmission will adhere to Spain’s National Security Framework (ENS) and current personal data-protection regulations.
A spokesperson for the council confirmed the tendering stage, but did not provide the vendor or finalised contract details at this stage.
