The city of Bruges has rolled out 18 high-tech air quality meters, as part of the city’s push to improve air quality monitoring and public health. These meters are strategically placed throughout the city, including in both the center and suburban areas, to track pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide, ozone, and fine particles in real time. The data is accessible to the public through color-coded sensor boxes, the city’s website, and the Airly app, helping residents make informed decisions about outdoor activities.
The project should offer valuable insights into how air quality fluctuates throughout the day and across seasons, allowing the city to pinpoint pollution hotspots and take targeted actions to reduce harmful emissions. The initiative, backed by the Flemish Environment Agency (VMM) and European grant funding, will undergo testing over the next two years. By the end of this year, an interactive screen will be installed to keep residents and visitors updated on Bruges’ air quality in real time.
