The city of Vénissieux in France is implementing a new system to tackle illegal waste dumping. Starting late March, six smart cameras will be installed in key locations to identify offenders.
The solution brought by Vizzia follows a 2024 citizen survey in which 45.8% of 7,473 participants called for stricter penalties, while 46.3% requested improved waste collection. The system combines prevention and enforcement.
When illegal dumping is detected, offenders will receive a notice to clean the area within 15 days. Failure to comply will result in fines. For individuals, penalties start at €60 for a first offense, rising to €150 for repeat violations, and up to €1,500 for a third offense. Businesses face steeper fines, ranging from €1,500 for initial violations to €8,000 for large-scale or hazardous waste dumping.
The city council unanimously approved the measure last October, citing the financial and environmental impact of illegal dumping. Municipal workers may also charge cleanup costs if offenders refuse to act.
