London is set to expand its air quality monitoring network with a £2.8 million joint investment from the Mayor of London and Bloomberg Philanthropies. The funding will support the next phase of the Breathe London programme, which provides real-time air quality data to help tackle pollution.
The initiative will deploy 146 new sensors provided by Clarity Movement, including 10 around Oxford Street, to monitor the impact of its recent pedestrianisation. A consortium led by Vodafone will oversee the project, while Imperial College London will continue managing community-focused sensors.
Since its 2021 launch, Breathe London has helped reduce pollution near schools by up to 23% through traffic restrictions. The expanded programme will include public engagement efforts, training sessions, and an updated website for real-time data access.
The announcement coincides with London Climate Action Week and marks two years since the global Breathe Cities initiative began, now active in 14 cities worldwide.
