California has launched the Statewide Mobile Monitoring Initiative (SMMI), a $27 million pilot project aimed at collecting hyper-local air pollution data across 64 underserved communities.
Led by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and funded through California Climate Investments (CCI), the initiative deploys a fleet of low-emission vehicles equipped with air quality sensors from environmental technology company Aclima.
Covering 950,000 miles and 5.2 million residents, the program is designed to provide granular, block-by-block data to better understand and address pollution in communities most affected by environmental injustice. The mobile fleet is supported by research partners including UC Berkeley, UC Riverside, and Aerodyne, with community organizations helping to shape monitoring efforts.
Data will be publicly released in June 2026 to inform public health, research, and regulatory strategies.
