New South Wales will pilot noise detection cameras. Set to begin by late 2024 in Bayside and Wollongong this trial aims to reduce loud cars and hooning. While the vendor brand for the cameras hasn’t been officially disclosed, the trial is a collaboration between the EPA, Transport for NSW, and NSW Police. The noise cameras, positioned within 15 meters of vehicles, will detect sounds over set decibel limits and automatically capture license plates.
Cars built before 2005 are limited to 90 decibels, while older vehicles have slightly higher limits. Fines can reach up to $600 for exceeding noise limits by 15 decibels or more. The trial will assess if the cameras can be used on moving vehicles to enforce noise limits, as current rules require stationary readings.
Crowdsourced data from Bayside Council has identified hotspots for hooning, including Bay Street in Brighton Le Sands. Similar technology has been implemented in cities like New York and London, where it has led to substantial fines and warnings for repeat offenders. The results of the NSW trial could influence future enforcement policies.
