Wiltshire Council has launched a year-long initiative to track PM2.5 air pollution across the county by deploying 100 low-cost air quality sensors. As part of the Wiltshire Community Air Network (WCAN), the project aims to gather real-time data on fine particulate matter, which poses environmental and health risks. The council is using PurpleAir Zen PM2.5 sensors, a widely adopted model known for providing accessible, real-time air quality data via an online platform.
Volunteers are being sought to host sensors outdoors with access to mains power and Wi-Fi. The devices will be distributed across Wiltshire’s 18 community areas, with priority given to locations near schools, healthcare facilities, and supported housing. While Wiltshire’s overall air quality is good, the initiative reflects growing attention to PM2.5, a pollutant not yet regulated under local air quality management standards. Applications to host a sensor are open until 23 June 2025.
