Zaragoza City Council Seeks €1.6 Million in EU Funds for Water Management Digitalization

Zaragoza City Council has announced plans to apply for €1.6 million in funding from the third round of PERTE grants for Water Digitalization, part of Spain’s Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan. The funds, managed by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, aim to enhance the city’s intelligent water cycle management.

The proposed Digitaliza 2 project includes initiatives such as implementing detection systems for sanitation network overflows, advancing remote meter reading, and developing hydraulic simulation tools. Additionally, the project will focus on creating drought emergency plans, improving sanitation system management, and installing solar panels at the La Almozara wastewater treatment plant for energy self-sufficiency.

This effort builds on previous successes, as Zaragoza has already secured €7.4 million in European aid during the first PERTE call. The funding has supported the digitalization and sensorization of the city’s water supply, sanitation, and irrigation networks.

The council emphasizes that these measures align with Zaragoza’s goal of becoming a climate-neutral city by promoting efficient water management, reducing leaks, and lowering energy consumption across the water cycle. The Urban Planning, Infrastructure, Energy, and Housing department, alongside municipal company Ecociudad Zaragoza, is already working on remote meter management, process automation, and leak detection in buildings.
