Xcel Energy is collaborating with Itron and Tesla to deploy an advanced virtual power plant (VPP) in Colorado. The project will integrate Itron’s IntelliFLEX Aggregator DERMS solution with Tesla’s Powerwall home batteries to enhance grid flexibility and stability.
The initiative, part of Xcel Energy’s Renewable Battery Connect program, will aggregate distributed energy resources (DERs), including residential solar panels and battery storage, to function as a unified power source during peak demand. Colorado’s high solar potential makes it an ideal location for the project.
Itron’s DERMS platform, already managing 3 million DER devices across 30 U.S. utilities, should optimize energy dispatch and improve grid efficiency. The collaboration aims to support Xcel Energy’s renewable energy goals while ensuring reliable power supply.
