Spain BoostWater Management with Amazon-Backed AI Initiatives

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has unveiled three new water projects in Aragon, Spain, with a €17.2 million investment aimed at addressing water scarcity, modernizing infrastructure, and reducing flood risks. These initiatives include an AI-powered early-warning flood system, AI-driven agricultural water optimization, and upgrades to Huesca’s water supply infrastructure.

The projects should benefit over 700,000 residents in Zaragoza by enhancing flood prevention and improving water management. Additionally, local farmers in the Ebro basin should gain access to AI tools to optimize irrigation and reduce water usage. In Huesca, aging pipelines will be replaced to ensure a more reliable water supply.

These efforts build on two existing AWS-supported projects in Aragon, including a leak detection system in Villanueva de Gállego and a clean water initiative in Pina de Ebro. Amazon aims to achieve water positivity by 2030, returning more water to communities than it uses in its operations.
