Guardamar del Segura Launches €232,590 Smart Water Metering Initiative

Kurrant News Desk · ·2 min read

The municipality of Guardamar del Segura (Alicante, Spain) has approved and initiated a smart-metering initiative valued at approximately €232,590. The project will deploy 12 concentrator antennas and 637 radio-module-equipped water meters across 22 tourist establishments and over 600 second-home residences, with completion targeted within six months.

Background and Project Scope

The smart water-management scheme is part of Spain’s wider “Planes de Sostenibilidad Turística” programme, aimed at increasing the sustainability and digitalisation of infrastructure in tourist-destination municipalities. Guardamar’s local council approved the project budget and framework in mid-2025.

The deployment involves installing 12 concentrator antennas at municipal facilities (such as pumping stations and water tanks) to ensure full area coverage. Each of the 637 new meters will transmit consumption data via radio modules to a central system, enabling real-time monitoring. The residential roll-out will focus on urbanisations such as Pinomar, Campomar, Pórtico Mediterráneo and Moncayo.

Technical Details and Anticipated Benefits

Once operational, the system will provide data-driven visibility of water consumption and network behaviour. Features will include real-time alerts for excessive usage, leak detection, irregular flow patterns and potential fraud. Residents and property managers will gain access to a dedicated web and mobile application to monitor their consumption and receive personalised notifications.

From a utility and municipal-services perspective, the technology aims to reduce non-revenue water (NRW), optimise maintenance scheduling and support demand management in peak tourist seasons. In a coastal town such as Guardamar, which experiences fluctuations in population due to second-homes and holiday accommodation, the enhanced data visibility should bolster operational resilience and sustainability.
