Hidraqua (Part of Veolia Group) Spearheads Water‐Cycle Digitalization in Vinalopó

Kurrant News Desk · ·2 min read

Hidraqua, part of the Veolia group, is driving digital transformation across the complete water cycle in the Alto, Medio and Bajo Vinalopó regions to support sustainable, efficient and climate-resilient supply and sanitation systems. Under the leadership of manager Daniel Coloma, the company is coordinating efforts to integrate real-time data, sensor networks and analytics to optimize operations from water capture through distribution and wastewater treatment.

A central project in this effort is AquaAlliance. Digitalization for Sustainability, which will cover 13 municipalities in Alicante’s Vinalopó area. The initiative has a budget of more than €7.8 million, supported via the second call of Spain’s PERTE program for digitalization of the urban water cycle.

Key actions include installation of sensors across networks, smart metering and tele-reading of consumption, remote control of pumping and reservoir systems, modeling of sanitation infrastructure, and advanced monitoring of discharge quality. All of these systems will feed into a central hub operated by Hidraqua via its DINAPSIS Costa Blanca digital operations center.

Beyond Vinalopó, Hidraqua has secured a total of €16.2 million in European and national funds (through MITECO) for four digitalization projects across municipalities in Valencia and Alicante. Of this, approximately €7.9 million is allocated to the 13 Vinalopó municipalities. The full group’s digital investment in the region is reported to amount to about €16.5 million.

The project aims to enhance water quality oversight, anticipate system incidents, reduce leakage and waste, adapt to climate stress (such as droughts or flooding), and support circular water use (e.g. reuse for irrigation or fire prevention). The sensorization and data platforms are expected to allow more responsive, transparent, and energy-efficient water management.
