Turning Data into Art: Prague’s Vision for a Smarter City

📖 Read Video Transcript
OICT Prague is a municipal company.
A municipal company of the city of Prague, established to operate the city data platform, to operate the mobility app and services, mobility as a service apps for the city of Prague and to implement a smart Prague strategy for the city of Prague.
So what we are presenting is a new way to show and experience urban data because, we are doing a great deal of digital innovation.
We have a lot of data about the life in Prague, mobility, microclimate waste management.
But it's something that it's not easily accessible to most of the people.
It's a kind of invisible innovations that we are doing.
And, we are now looking at ways to work with a creative sector and with artists to create immersive, creative experiences for the citizens and for the decision makers to really show the power behind data and to help them to make good use of them and appreciate, what they can actually use the data for.
Take real live data from the Golemio (Prague’s smart city platform) platform and turn them into visual art and music.
So what you see behind me is one of the newest iterations of this approach, where you have kind of pixely dreamy, boards that take live data from the platform and create artistic creative interpretations of how you can see, for example, heatwaves in the city or delays in public transportation or waste management issues.
And then you can really start a discussion, because then you can bring people to a dashboard or to a data set, and they already will have some prior understanding of what they should be looking for or have some emotion related to what they see.
People already are aware of the issues, like heat islands, but they don't really have the tools to understand them correctly and to appreciate what solutions they should demand or ask for or support.
With this, you can take, comparison basically from a street that has certain measure like trees and some that doesn't and engage them in a new way.
Because they are fatigued of being shown dashboards and pie charts, etc.
This is something you can walk in and you can hear the data, you can play with it, understand it.
